Sartre, Jean-Paul
(born on June 21, 1905 in Paris / died on April 15, 1980 à Paris)
Jean-Paul Sartre was a philosopher who defended existentialism. A strong
advocate of freedom of subject (freedom in situation), represented in his famous
expression “existence precedes essence”. He is the author of many books
relating to philosophy, literature or theater. He developed central ideas in his
work like “existence precedes essence” (unlike a tool, man exists firstly and
defines his nature afterwards), bad faith, nothingness, angst , the look of others,
reification (“chosification”)… He is also a figure who was well known for his
advocacy for many causes.
